Introduction

In summer 2010 Carine Ries visited Chupaca, Peru, and the local charitable organisation 'Peru Luz de Esperanza' to explore the possibility of implementing a music therapy skill-sharing programme. The outcome of the exchange was extremely positive. I have recently been appointed to the project to work alongside Carine and in partnership with Music as Therapy International to deliver a this skill-sharing project.

What is a skill-sharing programme?

The goal of a skill-sharing programme is to build on the existing skills and strengths of the local team. Current activities can be supported and the use of music in therapeutic ways can be developed and explored.

The aim is to make this project sustainable. By supporting and developing the resources of the local team, new skills can be introduced into their ongoing work with local children and their families. Sharing basic music therapy concepts as well as developing practical skills through musical activities will empower the team to use music in a variety of settings, without a music therapist needing to be present at a later stage.

Chupaca is about 300 km, or a 7-hour bus ride away from Lima and is situated in the Rio Mantaro valley, in the central highlands of Peru. Although in the cultural and commercial centre of the whole central Peruvian Andes, many children in Chupaca live in extreme poverty and difficult family circumstances.

It is important to keep an open mind about the form a music programme could take in this context. Certainly different from the typical Music Therapy settings in the UK.

It is an ethical obligation to hold emotional factors in mind, for the safety of the children and those who work with them. The team members have to feel safe and secure in the activities they are leading. This can be helped by providing the necessary theoretical background and practical experience, first under guidance and later on under supervision, until the point is reached where the work can take place in the absence of a music therapist.
